DIY No Sew recycled T-shirt bag!
Even though this is a "repurpose and upcycle" project, we've included this in our "make stuff" section as it's a quick and easy project that you can do with the kids. For this tutorial we chose a long sleeve tee that the kids have grown out of. The t-shirt has sentimental value so now we get to repurpose it and keep it in our home.
What you'll need to make a no-sew bag:
- Scissors
- T-shirt
Step One
Carefully cut off the band of the shirt in one continuous piece as this will become the handle of the bag. TIP!!! Put this in a safe place until needed, it's very easy to misplace when you start to cut up the shirt.
Step Two
Cut through both layers of fabric making a fringe across the bottom, be sure to cut the seam joins as well. In this example the cuts are 6cm long and just over 1cm wide (1.2cm)
Step Three
Cut the band off each sleeve trying to keep the cut parallel to the side of the shirt. If using a short sleeve shirt, cut the hemmed area off.
Step Four
Cut through both layers of fabric making a fringe across each arm
Step Five
Cut the neck area out as per the image. You can cut a fringe around the neck or you can leave it plain which will give a wider opening for your bag.
Step Six
Starting at the bottom of the shirt tie the upper and lower first cut together in a double knot. Do this all along the bottom until it is all joined. In our example we have created a long fringe at the bottom.
Next, turn the t-shirt inside out and repeat this process on the sides where the sleeves were. In our tutorial we have created a knotted stitch that is visible when you turn out the t-shirt bag.
Step Seven
To attached the handle grab the hem that you cut off in step 1. Fold the handle band in half. Pass the band material through the bag opening inside and push through the first hole of the sleeve join so now the handle is on the outside of the sleeve join, form a loop and pass the other end of the handle through the loop and pull tight.
Step Eight
Take the handle to the other side of the bag, push the end through the first join of the sleeve so that it is now on the outside, tie a knot.
