Got an old frame lying around or picked one up for free on Ziilch?
How about trying your hand at creating your own coloured chalk board!
What will you need to create your DIY chalk board?
- A frame with a solid backing board
- Liquid nails - if you have a large board that requires reinforcing
- Water based acrylic paint (preferably a colour that will contrast well with white chalk)
- Unsanded grout (you can buy this from a hardware or tile shop)
- Roller, paintbrush or foam sponge
- Fine sandpaper - Rag / Cloth
- White chalk for priming
Step One
Choose your frame. If you have a large frame & backboard you will need to use 2 backboards to reinforce it and make it more sturdy. If using a smaller frame one backboard should be sufficient.
Step Two
Glue the two boards together with liquid nails.
Step Three
Walk over the stuck boards to get a better bond.
Step Four
Mix the paint and unsanded grout.
Chalkboard paint recipe:
- 1 cup of water base acrylic matt or satin/ low sheen paint
- 2 tablespoons of unsanded grout
Step Five
Apply with a foam roller or foam brush and sand lightly between coats.
If using a roller you will need 4 to 5 coats, if using the brush 3 coats should be sufficient.
Allow 30 minutes between coats….more in cold weather.
Step Six
To prime the boards cover it with chalk…laying the stick on its side to get a good coverage
Step Seven
Rub in the chalk with your hand.
Step Eight
Wipe off with a barely wet cloth.
Step Nine
Recoat the board with chalk and lightly wipe off excess with a soft cloth.
Finished Chalk Board
The board is now ready for use. Always wipe off with a soft cloth or chalk duster.
