DIY - How to paint distressed furniture. We update an old TV unit with stunning results.
What you will need for this DIY project:
A drop sheet
A screw driver
Paint brushes
Sandpaper 80 grit
Sandpaper 120 grit
Low sheen paint
A table / cabinet
Step One
Remove any handles that may interfere with painting.
Step Two
Moderately sand desired area that you wish to paint with the 80 grit sandpaper. You want there to be enough of a rough surface for the new paint to stick but not too much that you have sanded right into the timber. Make sure to wipe off any excess dust.
Step Three
Start to paint desired areas. Dont be afraid to be quite rough as you are looking for a weathered look. Remember to work with the grain of the timber and always paint in long continuous strokes. Paint a second coat if desired.
Step Four
Leave the furniture to dry over night.
Step Five
Once dry, take the 120 grit sandpaper and begin sanding off areas that would naturally end up distressed, places where hands would have held it, or around corners that could easily get nicked. Be sure to stop before you go too crazy with the sanding, and then wipe the entire piece with the a cloth to remove dust.
Step Six
Re-attach the handles to the newly painted unit.
