Tips for Moving House from Ziilch.
Moving house can stressful but it doesn't have to be. Think of moving house as an opportunity to go through your stuff and get rid of things you no longer use. Here is a step by step guide to decluttering when moving house. Think of this as your moving house checklist.
Step 1
Make the decision to only take things you are going to need to the new house. This means you have to know your new house - make sure you have checked it out thoroughly and you know what is going to useful and what isn't.
Step 2
Don't just hire a skip and throw everything in it. That is a huge waste of money - it's better to reuse, recycle or to give items to other people who might need them. Instead of just putting your unwanted stuff in a skip think about other options like donating to an opportunity shop, having a garage sale, selling items on sites like Ebay and Gumtree or listing them on Ziilch. But more on this later.
Step 3
Get some packing boxes - you're going to need them anyway. Write "rubbish" on one box and "good stuff" on another. Sort through the items in your home room by room and decide on what you no longer need. Then you have to decide whether these items are "rubbish" or "good stuff". To do that you need to ask yourself the following questions;
Is this item still in useable condition?
Could it be recycled?
Or could it be upcycled - used for another purpose?
If the answer to these three questions is "no" then the item goes in the rubbish box.
Step 4
Shop around for the cheapest skip hire company - they can vary greatly in price. Once you have decided on a company you need to work out what size skip you will require. Try to make do with the smallest size skip - it will be the cheapest and it will mean that you are putting less into landfill. When the skip is out the front of the house you can empty all the items from the rubbish box into it. Be sure to pack down the items in the skip to be sure you get value for money.
Step 5
Now you have got rid of the rubbish it is time to deal with the "good stuff". For items that are in good condition and still working you need to ask; what can I do to get rid of this item? Here are some ideas for what to do with good stuff you no longer want.
- Donate it to an opportunity shop
- Give away free stuff to friends and neighbours
- Sell items on Ebay classifieds
- Sell items on other sites like Gumtree or The Trading Post
